As someone who is against not just caste-based discrimination, but the evil of caste system itself, I find it distressing to follow the rather heated arguments around the 'reservation' issue where quotas to the underprivileged sections of society are involved.
From time to time, a foreigner would ask me, "How do you say this in Indian?". And whenever there is time, I make it a point to let them know that there is no one language called "Indian" a la Korean or Japanese. Officially, there are 18 languages and several hundred dialects. Many of these have their own script for writing.
